Why lipid-rich skincare works with the skin, not against it.
Skincare has traditionally focused on adding more: more actives, more exfoliation, more stimulation. But healthy skin is also about what we protect, replenish and preserve.
At Perception Skin, we take a lipid-first approach.
Our formulations are built around carefully selected botanical lipids that are biocompatible with the skin and biomimetic in their function — meaning they complement the skin’s own lipid environment and help support the conditions needed for a healthy barrier.
The distinction matters. The skin’s barrier is built from a highly organised lipid matrix, primarily composed of ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. These lipids sit between the cells of the stratum corneum, helping regulate water loss and providing an essential protective interface between the skin and its environment.
What are biomimetic lipids?
“Biomimetic” means designed to imitate or complement biological structures and functions.
In skincare, this can include ingredients that resemble or support the behaviour of lipids naturally found on or within the skin. Importantly, botanical oils are not all chemically identical to human skin lipids. Rather, many contain fatty acids, wax esters, hydrocarbons, sterols and other lipophilic components that can complement the skin’s lipid environment.
That is why we describe our approach as biocompatible, biomimetic plant lipids, botanically derived oils selected for their lipid composition, skin affinity and functional properties.
Why does the skin need lipids?
The outermost layer of the skin is not simply a collection of dead cells. It is a sophisticated structure of corneocytes surrounded by organised lipids.
Think of it as a carefully constructed barrier.
When this lipid matrix is disrupted, the skin can become more vulnerable to increased water loss and environmental stress. Research has shown that the correct composition and organisation of skin lipids is fundamental to barrier function.
This is why supporting the lipid environment can be so important, particularly when skin feels dry, tight, reactive or depleted.
The botanical lipids we choose
We use a selection of plant-derived oils, each chosen for its individual lipid profile and the way it complements our formulations.
Squalane
Squalane is a stable, lightweight emollient closely related to squalene, a lipid naturally found in human sebum. Human skin surface lipids contain squalene as one of their characteristic components.
Plant-derived squalane provides a silky, lightweight emollience that helps soften the skin and reduce the feeling of dryness without leaving a heavy finish.
Organic Jojoba
Jojoba is particularly interesting because it is technically a liquid wax, rather than a conventional triglyceride oil. It is composed predominantly of long-chain wax esters, giving it a structure and sensory profile that makes it highly suited to topical skincare.
Its elegant, cushion-like feel makes it especially valuable in lipid-rich formulations designed to leave skin soft and conditioned.
Meadowfoam
Meadowfoam seed oil is valued for its distinctive fatty-acid profile and exceptional oxidative stability. Its long-chain fatty acids contribute to its rich yet elegant skin feel, making it a useful botanical lipid for formulations focused on nourishment and barrier support.
Organic Camellia
Camellia seed oil is naturally rich in oleic acid and other lipophilic compounds that contribute to its emollient properties.
It has a beautifully light, silky texture, making it particularly suited to facial oils and formulations designed to soften and condition without feeling occlusive.
Organic Argan
Argan oil is naturally rich in fatty acids, tocopherols and other unsaponifiable compounds. Its combination of oleic and linoleic acids, together with antioxidant-rich components, makes it a valued botanical oil in skin and hair formulations.
Research has also reported improvements in skin hydration and elasticity following topical use of argan oil.
Organic Rosehip
Rosehip oil contains a high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, particularly linoleic and α-linolenic acids, alongside other naturally occurring bioactive compounds.
It has attracted significant interest for topical skincare, particularly formulations targeting the appearance of uneven tone, scarring and compromised-looking skin.
Why we combine different lipids
We don't believe in one “miracle” oil.
Skin is complex, and no single botanical lipid can replicate the full composition of the skin barrier.
Instead, we combine complementary oils with different fatty-acid profiles, wax esters, hydrocarbons, antioxidants and other naturally occurring compounds.
This creates a multi-lipid approach — one designed to nourish, soften, condition and support the skin’s natural barrier environment.
There is also scientific precedent for combining different lipid classes to create formulations that more closely mimic the composition of healthy skin surface lipids. Research into botanical lipid mimetics has explored combinations of wax esters, glycerides, squalane and sterol-derived lipids, with improvements in hydration and barrier-related measures reported in experimental models.
Biocompatibility over intervention
For us, biocompatible skincare is not about making the skin work harder.
It is about giving the skin ingredients it can recognise, tolerate and work with.
